Dressing change

For patients with a drainage catheter for recurring pleural effusion or ascites, the catheter dressing must be changed after each drainage procedure.

How to change the dressing

1 | Clean the area around the catheter exit site with an alcohol-based skin disinfectant spray. When the wound has healed and the stitches have been removed, an alcohol swab may be used for this purpose. Once the skin around the catheter is dry, the new dressing can be applied.

2 | Place the foam slit compress around the catheter with the slit facing up.

3 | Roll up the catheter and place it on the foam slit compress.

4 | Cover the catheter with the gauze compresses. After that, take off both gloves.

5 | Peel off the printed protective film from the film dressing.

6 | Center the self-adhesive film dressing over the gauze compresses and apply it to the surrounding skin.

7 | Peel off the center part of the unprinted protective film from the film dressing.

8 | Carefully remove the frame of the unprinted protective film from the film dressing and smooth the entire self-adhesive film dressing from the center to the edges.

Please dispose of used materials in accordance with local regulations.
